Visit Ribeauvillé
The historic centre of Ribeauvillé is best explored on foot, following the Grand’Rue through the heart of the old town. Half-timbered houses, colorful façades, traditional signs and fountains line the streets, with wooded hills and medieval castles rising in the background.
As you wander, the town reveals a rich variety of architecture. Some buildings immediately catch the eye with their colors and timber framing, while others invite a closer look: a carved doorway, a flower-filled balcony or a courtyard glimpsed from the street.
Ribeauvillé also rewards those who venture beyond the main route. Turning into a quieter street, stopping to admire a façade or looking up towards the hills reveals another side of this lively Alsatian town, deeply connected to its past.
Things to see in Ribeauvillé
The Butchers’ Tower (Tour des Bouchers), rising above the Grand’Rue, is one of Ribeauvillé’s most recognisable landmarks. Around it, the old town is filled with historic houses, fountains, charming squares and the Church of Saint-Grégoire.
High above the town stand the three castles of Ribeauvillé: Saint-Ulrich, Girsberg and Haut-Ribeaupierre. Their ruins are reminders of the town’s medieval past. Walking trails leading towards the castles offer beautiful views over Ribeauvillé, the Alsace plain and the surrounding vineyards.
The town is also closely connected to the Alsace Wine Route. Just beyond the historic streets, vineyards cover the hillsides, creating a landscape that changes with every season.
Ribeauvillé is also known as the town of minstrels, a reference to the travelling musicians whose traditions remain part of its cultural identity today.
Christmas in Ribeauvillé
Every season brings a different atmosphere to Ribeauvillé. In spring, flowers brighten the façades and the vineyards begin to turn green. Summer brings life to the terraces, squares and streets of the historic centre.
In September, the Pfifferdaj, or Minstrels’ Festival, celebrates a centuries-old tradition with parades, costumes and festivities. It is one of Ribeauvillé’s most distinctive events, reflecting the town’s long association with travelling musicians.
As Christmas approaches, Ribeauvillé hosts its celebrated medieval Christmas market. Over two weekends in December, the historic centre takes on a different character, with craftspeople, costumed performers, festive decorations and entertainment inspired by the Middle Ages.
From winter lights and medieval costumes to historic stonework and living traditions, Ribeauvillé offers FLÂNE inspiration that goes far beyond its picturesque streets.
