Hunawihr

Nestled among the vineyards of Alsace, Hunawihr is a village where history and landscape come together naturally. Above its traditional winegrowers’ houses, the fortified Saint-Jacques-le-Majeur Church overlooks the rooftops and surrounding hills.

A peaceful place to discover slowly, through quiet streets, vineyards and scenic views.

Visit Hunawihr

On the Alsace Wine Route, between Ribeauvillé and Riquewihr, Hunawihr has a quieter atmosphere than some of its better-known neighbors. Its peaceful streets, historic winegrowers’ houses and surrounding vineyards create a landscape deeply connected to Alsace’s winemaking traditions.

Wandering through the village reveals old façades, narrow courtyards, cellar doors and architectural details that reflect everyday life in a winegrowing community. Half-timbered houses stand alongside simpler buildings, each contributing to Hunawihr’s distinctive character.

Look towards the hillside and the village’s most recognisable landmark comes into view: the fortified Saint-Jacques-le-Majeur Church, surrounded by its historic cemetery and defensive walls.

Hunawihr invites visitors to slow down and take their time, exploring without a strict itinerary and appreciating the connection between architecture, vineyards and landscape.

Things to see in Hunawihr

The fortified Saint-Jacques-le-Majeur Church is Hunawihr’s most distinctive landmark. Standing on a hill above the village, it is surrounded by an old fortified cemetery and defensive walls. This remarkable historic setting also offers beautiful views across the rooftops and surrounding vineyards.

The church has an unusual history. Since the 17th century, it has been shared by Catholic and Protestant congregations under a system known as the simultaneum. Inside, historic frescoes and architectural details reflect centuries of local history.

The Grand Cru Rosacker vineyards are another defining feature of Hunawihr. Walking paths through the vines reveal different views of the village, with the church tower and fortified walls rising above the landscape.

For a different experience, the Butterfly Garden (Jardin des Papillons) is home to exotic butterflies in a lush tropical setting. It offers another opportunity to discover the colors and patterns of the natural world close to the village.

Christmas in Hunawihr

In Hunawihr, the changing seasons are most visible in the surrounding vineyards. In spring, the vines begin to grow and trees blossom around the village. The walking paths offer clear views of the fortified church and nearby hills.

During summer, the vineyards turn a rich green, while quiet streets and historic houses create a peaceful atmosphere. It is a lovely time to explore the village on foot and follow the paths between the vines.

Autumn in Hunawihr is especially photogenic. Vine leaves turn yellow and orange, the grape harvest shapes the rhythm of local life and the landscape surrounding the church and medieval walls changes color.

In winter, the village takes on a different kind of calm. Old stone walls, rooftops and the church tower stand out in the softer light above the resting vineyards.

For FLÂNE, Hunawihr is a reminder that a place’s beauty often lies in its simplest details: a line of vines, an old tower or the changing light on a historic façade.
